The 6 Days Umbwe Route is Kilimanjaro’s most demanding trail, known for its rapid ascent and sharp elevation gain. It approaches from the southern side and quickly climbs through dense rainforest before emerging onto exposed ridges with breathtaking views.

Because of its aggressive profile, Umbwe is best suited for experienced hikers or very fit climbers confident in their endurance and altitude tolerance.

After merging with the Machame Route near Barranco, the trail follows the Southern Circuit — offering spectacular glaciers, valleys, and high-alpine landscapes before the summit attempt.

Best Time to Climb

Due to its steep terrain, climbing Umbwe during stable weather is extremely important for safety and comfort.

• April–May (heavy rains)
• November (short rains)

6 Day Umbwe Route Itinerary

Day 1: Umbwe Gate → Umbwe Camp	5–7 hrs | A steep forest climb that immediately tests stamina.
Day 2: Umbwe Camp → Barranco Camp	4–6 hrs | Trek along a narrow ridge with incredible valley views.
Day 3: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp	4–5 hrs | Climb the famous Barranco Wall and continue the Southern Circuit.
Day 4: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp	4–5 hrs | Reach high camp and prepare for summit night.
Day 5: Barafu → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp	10–14 hrs | Midnight summit push followed by a long descent.
Day 6: Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate	4–6 hrs | Final descent through lush rainforest.
